At least 20 killed, hundreds injured in earthquake in southern Pakistan

A powerful earthquake struck the southwestern parts of Pakistan on Thursday, leaving at least 20 dead and hundreds more injured.

The 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck parts of the Southwestern Balochistan early on Thursday morning, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority said.

The National Seismic Monitoring Centre said the 5.9 magnitude earthquake, having a depth of about 15 kilometers, was centered close to Harnai district.

Deputy Commissioner of Harnai District Sohail Anwar Hashmi confirmed the death toll and said six children were among those killed, the Dawn News reported.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Geo News reported that the death toll is feared to rise as a medical emergency has been declared at the Civil Hospital Quetta where doctors and other paramedical staff have been recalled on an emergency basis.
