COVID-19 outbreak reported in a refugee shelter in Downtown Toronto

The Homes First Society has confirmed the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in one of the refugee shelters run by the organization in Downtown Toronto.

“Unfortunately at this time, Homes First can confirm positive COVID-19 cases in one of our shelters. We are working closely with Toronto Public Health to ensure the health and safety of all our clients and staff. We appreciate your continued support through this challenging time,” the organization said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the officials in Homes First Society have said they were first notified about the outbreak of the disease in Willowdale Welcome Centre on Thursday.

The officials further added that four COVID-19 cases have been reported in the facility and they are waiting to hear back on multiple other tests as the facility houses more than 200 people.
