First positive case of Omicron variant of COVID-19 identified in Alberta: Dr. Hinshaw


The Alberta Health on Tuesday confirmed that the first case of the Omicron Variant of COVID-19 has been identified.

We have now confirmed 1 case of Omicron variant in AB, in a returning traveller from Nigeria and the Netherlands, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Offucer of Health said.

Dr. Hinshaw further added the individual tested positive while asymptomatic and has not left quarantine since arrival. “We have notified the individual and their household.”

She also added that this is the only confirmed case of Omicron in the province.

Anyone who has arrived in Canada from the affected region in the last 14 days must immediately have a COVID test and quarantine at home for 14 days from arrival, she added.
