The Health Canada has approved the use of Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine as a booster shot for all adults aged 18 and over.
“Health Canada has authorized the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty COVID vaccine as a booster shot to be used in adults 18 years of age and older at least six months after completing their primary vaccine series,” the Health Canada said in a statement.
The statement further added that COVID-19 vaccines in use in Canada continue to be very effective in protecting against serious illness, hospitalization and death due to COVID-19 virus.
Booster doses are designed to help people maintain their immunity longer, the statement said, adding that Health Canada authorized the booster dose after a thorough, independent review of the evidence.
Meanwhile, the Health Canada, said people in Canada should consult their local public health guidance for further details on which individuals or groups of people are recommended to receive a booster dose at this time.
The Health Canada also added that only vaccines that are proven to be safe, effective and of high quality are authorized for use in Canada. The COVID-19 vaccines have been rigorously tested during their development and then carefully reviewed by Health Canada.
