Mendicino hails IDRF Canada for raising funds for the newly-arrived Afghan families

Marco Mendicino, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada, hailed IDRF Canada for raising funds for the newly-arrived Afghan families.

In a short statement posted online, Mendicino, said the International Development and Relief Foundation (IDRF), organized a charity event tonight to raise funds for newly arrived Afghan families.

Many Canadians, including large Canadian businesses pledged support to Afghan refugees as Canada announced to welcome thousands of Afghans feeling Taliban following the takeover of the country by the extremist group in August this year.

A group of over 250 Afghan refugees, including many school-aged girls, arrived in Canada on Friday, weeks after the Government of Canada announced it will double its humanitarian resettlement commitment from 20,000 to 40,000 Afghan refugees.

Earlier, Prime Minister Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to welcome 40,000 Afghans after talking with the G20 leaders earlier this week.

“Today, I spoke with G20 leaders about the situation in Afghanistan. The global community is committed to the protection of human rights, including of women & girls, and we’ll continue to use our voices to make sure Afghans have access to humanitarian assistance being provided,” Trudeau said in a statement posted online last Tuesday.
