Marco Mendicino, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), took to the Twitter earlier to inform regarding the arrival of the new group of Afghan refugees.

Mendicino said some of the newly-arrived school-aged girls are associated with Malala Fund.

“Their arrival in Canada means they will have the opportunity to make a new home where they can pursue their studies,” he added.

Malala Yousufuzai, the Founder of Malala Fund, also posted a statement on Twitter, saying “Today the first of several Malala Fund Education Champions from Afghanistan arrived safely in Canada.”

She thanked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Minister Marco Mendicino, for ensuring the protection of women leaders, human rights activists, and other vulnerable Afghan refugees.

Prime Minister Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to welcome 40,000 Afghans after talking with the G20 leaders earlier this week.

“Today, I spoke with G20 leaders about the situation in Afghanistan. The global community is committed to the protection of human rights, including of women & girls, and we’ll continue to use our voices to make sure Afghans have access to humanitarian assistance being provided,” Trudeau said in a statement posted online on Tuesday.

Trudeau further added that “Canada is welcoming 40,000 refugees and we’re urging others to step up their support to safely resettle refugees, too.”

The Government of Canada recently announced it will double its humanitarian resettlement commitment from 20,000 to 40,000 Afghan refugees.
