The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) announced Tuesday that the agency is investigating Anti-Riot Weapon ENfield discharge at man in Brantford.
According to SIU, the officers discharged weapon in a residence at Brantford this morning.
Citing preliminary information, SIU, added in its statement that at approximately 6 a.m., on October 19, 2021, the Brantford Police Service were called to a residence on Tanglewood Terrace for a person in crisis.
The statement futher added that upon arrival, there was an interaction with the man and officers discharged an ARWEN.
The man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital for assessment, SIU said, adding that while it is unknown at this time if the man was seriously injured, the SIU’s mandate was invoked because a police officer discharged an ARWEN, which is classified as a firearm.
Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, a firearm is defined as a barreled weapon from which any shot, bullet or other projectile can be discharged and that is capable of causing serious bodily injury or death to a person, the statement said.
