The shortlist includes the names of five artists who represent five regions across the country, including Gabi Dao of West Coast and Yukon, Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory of Prairies and North, Rajni Perera of Ontario, Lorna Bauer of Quebec, and Rémi Belliveau Atlantic.
Rob Sobey, Chair, Sobey Art Foundation said “I want to personally congratulate these five inspiring artists shortlisted for the 2021 Sobey Art Award. For 20 years the Sobey Art Foundation has been proud to support Canadian visual artists through this award, and we are excited to celebrate their exceptional work at the National Gallery of Canada this fall.”
The Sobey Art Foundation will award a total of $400,000 in prize money this year, including $100,000 to the overall winner.
Meanwhile, each of the shortlisted artists will receive $25,000 and each of the remaining twenty longlisted artists will receive $10,000.
In addition, the five shortlisted artists will be featured in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada in the fall of 2021.
