Special Investigation Unit investigating the deaths of two men in Toronto

The Special Investigation Unit (SUI) is investigating the deaths of two men who died in Ontario late on Saturday night.

At approximately 11:28 p.m. on October 9, 2021, Toronto Police Service officers went to a residence on Church Street for a 34-year-old man armed with a gun, the SUI said in a statement.

After police arrived, the man barricaded himself in the unit, the statement said, adding that police entered the unit and located the man in medical distress.

The statement also added that the paramedics were called and the man died a short time later.

The Special Investigation Unit in a separate statement said the Toronto Police Service responded to a residence on Castledene Crescent in Scarborough for an unknown trouble call, at approximately 7:27 p.m. on October 9, 2021.

A 41-year-old man sustained a serious injury after a police negotiator made contact with the man and started negotiation.

Police administered first aid until paramedics arrived but the man died after he was taken to hospital, the Special Investigation Unit added.

Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to each case, SUI said, adding that the post-mortems are scheduled for October 11, 2021.
