Toronto man assaulted with baseball bat dies, suspect charged with 2nd-degree murder


The Toronto Police announced Thursday that a 53-year-old man, who allegedly assaulted another man with a baseball bat, has been charged with second-degree murder.

“On Sunday, June 13, 2021, at approximately 9:30 p.m., a man was returning to his apartment in the Danforth Road and Brimley Road area,” the Toronto Police said in a statement.

The statement further added that the victim, Vijanant Persaud, 37, of Toronto was assaulted by a man known to him who was armed with a baseball bat

“The man died the next day,” the Toronto Police said, adding that the suspect was identified as Martin Harris, 53, of Toronto, who was arrested and charged with Second-Degree Murder.

The Toronto Police also added that the suspect appeared in court virtually today and will next appear at Toronto East Courts on Thursday, July 15, 2021, 9 a.m., room 407.
